Hundreds left dead in Syrian attack (18:13)

Syrian forces unleashed a barrage of artillery on the battered city of Homs for hours before dawn, killing more than 200 people in what appeared to be the bloodiest episode in the 11-month-old uprising, activists said.

Italian police divers are searching the Tiber in Rome for a 16-month-old boy who witnesses said was thrown into the river by his father.

Bosnian authorities declared a state of emergency in the capital Sarajevo after it was paralysed by snow, while hundreds of people remain trapped in their homes and vehicles throughout the country.
