Workers march in Warsaw over jobs

Tuesday December 15 2009

Thousands of workers from the Solidarity trade union have marched through the Polish capital to demand government protection for industrial jobs.

The workers rallied in front of Prime Minister Donald Tusk's office in central Warsaw, carrying the white and red flags of the Solidarity trade union, blowing on horns and setting a pile of tyres on fire.

They called on the government protect unemployment benefits for people laid off from shipyards.

They also want Warsaw to throw more support behind the ailing shipbuilding, armament and railway industries.

Thousands of workers in Poland have lost their jobs in the industries amid restructuring and privatisation efforts in this ex-communist country.
