Masquerade rehearse for 'Big Maggie' play
Wednesday March 03 2010
MASQUERADE Drama Group has started rehearsals for John B. Keane's 'Big Maggie'. This is one of his better known plays and is the story of Big Maggie Polpin and her attempts to keep her family together after the death of her husband.
It is still an enduring theatre favourite and the dialogue resonates with hilarious, caustic putdowns as the determined Maggie deals with her incompetent family and unwanted suitors.
Everyone wants a part of Big Maggie and her property but she has other ideas. Keane was writing at a time when sanctimonious religion promoted sexual repression and made the likes of Maggie the way she is and left her desperate to achieve self realisation.
Is Maggie a bitter, sexually repressed widow or simply a woman who seeks independence and freedom?
The play is directed by Frank Duffy with a cast of familiar and new faces. It will be presented in the Gallery, Bridgewater Centre and will run from Wednesday May 12 to May 15.
