DCU PRESENTATION

The Youth - Physical Activity Towards Health (Y – Path) research team from Dublin City University (DCU) continue to work with First Year students of Coláiste Chill Mhantáin. In September and October the team conducted an assessment of the students' fitness and movement levels. It is hoped to develop a plan which can improve these levels.

On Monday last staff received an update on the research. Staff were also made aware of simple effective ways physical fitness can be encouraged and promoted throughout the school and it highlighted the importance and benefits of increasing physical activity.

SIXTH YEAR MOCK EXAMINATIONS

Our Sixth Year students began their mock examinations on Friday last. We wish them well in their studies. This provides an invaluable learning opportunity for students and will no doubt be of great benefit to them in their preparations for the state examinations.

COOKERY COMPETITION

On Wednesday February 1st four of our Transition Year students participated in the Takeaway My Way all island Cookery Competition. This competition is run by St. Angela's College, Sligo and the objective is to encourage students to display their culinary skills whilst promoting healthy eating. This competition is sponsored by safe food.

Students had to modify the recipe for their favourite takeaway dish so as to make it healthier and lower in cost. Clinton Byrne, James Wynne, Rory O'carroll and Cian Griffin created delectable dishes. Well done to all involved and we wish them luck in the next phase of the competition.

LCA TASKS

Our LCA 1 and 2 students had their task interviews last week in a number of subjects including Craft and Design, General Education, Practical Achievement and Contemporary Issues. The credits obtained from these interviews form a significant part of their overall Leaving Certificate results.

BUILD A BANK CHALLENGE

On Thursday January 27th Coláiste Chill Mhantáin's bank was launched as part of the AIB Build A Bank Challenge. The bank is run by the following Transition Year students; Nicole Hughes, Shauna Dickenson, Damian Doyle, Aidan Mcsuibhne, Enda Dempsey and Cillian Power.

A representative from the Wicklow branch of AIB was present on the day and offered very useful advice to the bank officials. The launch took place at lunchtime in our school canteen area where students opening accounts were treated to delicious homemade smoothies and they were also entered into a draw for an impressive hamper.

The opening of the bank provides a great opportunity for students to develop the practice of saving which will benefit them greatly in the long term. Students can continue to open accounts and make lodgements over the coming weeks. Well done to all involved and a sincere thank you to the staff of AIB Wicklow for their continued support.

LCVP WORK EXPERIENCE

Our Fifth Year LCVP students are completing their work experience from February 6th – 10th. This is a core element of their LCVP portfolio. We would like to take this opportunity to thank local businesses for providing students with this valuable learning experience.

The competition was played in five rounds over five days.
