WICKLOW man Hughie Nolan has received a prestigious national award for his voluntary contribution to Irish sport.

Hughie, from Newtownmountkennedy, was presented with his 'Youth Manager of the Year' award by Minster for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Martin Cullen at a recent ceremony held in Farmleigh, Dublin.

He was honoured along with 11 other people at the 2009 National Awards to Volunteers in Irish Sport.

Hughie grew up in Newtownmountkennedy and played with local club Newtown United until 1992. Shortly afterwards he took over the running of Newtown Juniors and has since overseen the development of some very talented footballers since then.

Clive Clarke, Paul McShane and Katie Taylor are just a few of the athletes who passed through Hughie's hands over the years.

One of the most qualified coaches in the area, Hughie is responsible for underage football in Newtown and looks after all the soccer needs of the young people in the area.

A truly dedicated volunteer, Hughie cuts the grass, marks the pitches, puts up nets, arranges all the coaching courses for the managers, attends all the league meetings, writes articles for the local media and even updates the website!

In the summer he runs soccer camps and a Mini World Cup competition for children of all ages.
