Baby James recovering well from life-saving heart surgery
The ten-month-old boy underwent surgery on Tuesday (July 2) to correct a heart defect that limits blood circulation and repair the hole in one side of his heart.
Speaking before the surgery, his mother, Nicola Ward, from Churchview, said the was glad the time for the surgery had come, but was very worried about her little boy.
I'm very nervous,' she told the Wicklow People.
I'm very worried but excited that he will finally be getting the operation.'
You are handing your child over to someone you don't know and his life is literally in their hands.'
Little James was born with pulmonary atresia, a rare, congenital heart defect sometimes called blue baby syndrome', because blood circulation is severely affected. He also has an abnormal hole in one side of his heart, a condition called VSD. Because of the rarity of his condition, James has had to travel to Birmingham to be operated on by world-expert paediatric cardiac surgeons.
Ms Ward said she owed a debt of gratitude to everyone who dontated to James' appeal, which has raised enough money to enable her to stay with him in England during his recovery period, which could be from three weeks to three months, depending on complications.
Ms Ward said her partner James was travelling over to be with mother and son for the next two weeks.
She said her five-year-old daughter was also aware of the ordeal her little brother was going through.
