RESIDENTS of the Drumkay Housing Estate in Rathnew outlined problems in the area at a public meeting and outlined their support for a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.

Also in attendance at the meeting were local councillor John Snell and Community Garda Marco de Luca.

A number of residents felt some former housing officials and public representatives had a lot to answer for in relation to the total disregard to the council's own laws and regulations when it comes to integration and making sure applicants are suitable and qualify in accordance with the council's own scheme of letting. Families trying to rear their children in a safe and friendly environment felt many of their complaints continue to fall on deaf ears.

Garda de Luca offered his support for a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and outlined the zero tolerance policy the gardai hold toward anti-social behaviour and unlawful acts.

Cllr. Snell says now is the time to rectify past mistakes, and welcomed the Housing Department's commitment to address any difficulties.

'I have firm assurances that the newly formed team of Estate Development Officer, WCC social worker and Tenant Liaison Officer in conjunction with the community garda will treat Drumkay as a priority,' offered Cllr. Snell.

Snell is calling on all residents of Rathnew to avail of agency and official services to nip all forms of harassment, intimidation and theft in the bud.

Drumkay residents have organised another public meeting for February 9 at Rathnew AFC clubhouse at 8 p.m.
