WICKLOW TOWN is the most littered of the three towns in the county surveyed during the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL).

The town is classed as moderately littered and came in at 41st position in a group of 53 towns and cities surveyed around the country.

While not exactly a glowing endorsement of the county town, it is an improvement on the 2009 ranking which saw the town classed as a litter black spot.

The judges said that while some sites in the town were clean to European standards a number of other sites were pulling the town down in the rankings. However, they felt a little extra work and vigilance could see the town climb up the results table.

The worst site surveyed by the judges was the Ballynerrin Approach Road which is a litter black spot according to them. ' The Ballynerrin Approach Road is a litter black spot. The area encompasses Grahams Court and Dromard Bed and Breakfast. This was a very poor site - there were heavy levels of a wide variety of litter throughout this approach road and it needs attention.'

Abbey Community College also needs work according to the judges. ' This site has a serious litter problem. There was a very obvious litter presence in the grounds of this school, particularly in the hedges along the perimeter. There was a wide variety of litter, especially food related litter.'

The Lidl site, the Rathnew Approach Road, Glebemount and the Wicklow Relief Road were all classed as moderately littered.

Four other areas surveyed, the car park at the harbour front on Castle Street, Graham's Court, Main Street and the Dunbar Approach Road, were all deemed to be clean to European norms.

' The car park at the harbour front was a fresh, clean and well maintained site. The road surface, signage and markings were in good condition and there was an overall positive environment.

'Graham's Court is a very well maintained residential area with individual properties and the public grass areas in very good condition.

' The Main Street is well served by litter bins and the overall impression was of a fresh and clean street. The Dunbar Approach Road is an excellent approach road.

' The road surface, signage and markings were in good condition and the overall impression created was very positive.'
