ROAD RAGE
GARDA PROBE AS CLAIM FIREARM PRODUCED AFTER CRASH
ARMED GARDAI swooped on Rathnew after allegations that a firearm was drawn following a car crash.
Two vehicles from the Regional Support Unit containing four armed guards, along with armed detectives from Wicklow and Arklow quickly descended on Ballybeg on Wednesday afternoon to try and defuse the situation.
The collision occurred at around 1.15 p.m. and involved a car and a van. Both parties involved were known to one another. It seems that tempers flared up after the accident and allegations were made that one person produced a firearm as tensions mounted.
The driver of the car was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital by ambulance where they were treated for whiplash. None of the occupants in the van required medical treatment.
Local residents were shocked to see armed officers jump out of their vehicles after rushing to the scene to try and calm the situation down.
'After the collision tempers were frayed. There were certainly some very irate people. Currently we are investigating a road traffic accident and allegations that a firearm may have been produced,' said a garda spokesperson.
