Student assaulted in row over laptop

CASE ADJOURNED YOUTH PLEADS GUILTY TO OFFENCES

Wednesday March 03 2010

AN ARKLOW YOUTH who assaulted a student had his case adjourned at last week's sitting of Arklow District Court.

The youth who cannot be named for legal reasons was charged with assault at the Coolgreaney Road, Arklow on January 25, 2008. He was further charged with theft from the Applegreen Service Station on February 10, 2008 and with the attempted unauthorised interference with a vehicle and full burglary at 27 Wexford Road, Arklow on January 29, 2008.

He pleaded guilty to the offences and Inspector Mary Aldridge said that the youth had assaulted a student outside Arklow Community College over a laptop. She said the student in question had been very traumatic by the assault.

Judge Murrough Connellan adjourned the case until March 10 to see if restorative justice could be used in the case which would allow the youth apologised in person to his victim.

Inspector Aldridge said that on February 10, the youth stole goods to the value of € 23.10 from Applegreen Service Station and said that on January 29 he entered a house on the Wexford Road through a rear window. He also attempted to interfere with a car parked there.

In respect of the theft from Applegreen, Judge Connellan bound him to the peace for one year in his own bond of € 50. He adjourned the other matters until April 21 to allow for the preparation of a probation report and ordered the youth to obey the existing curfew from 8pm until 8am.
