Tommy kept friends and family close to his heart

Wednesday February 08 2012

TOMMY Allen died suddenly on January 1, 2012. He was a son of the late John and Ciss Allen RIP and was predeceased by his brother Dick. He lived most of his life in Dunlavin. After his marriage to Margaret they moved first to Stratford and then to Baltinglass. Tommy spent his last years in Beechpark Nursing home in Kildare. During those years he had a number of long stays at Naas General Hospital, he was in intensive care a few times where he came close to losing his battle. Even though his more recent years have been a struggle, going by the number of people paying their respects to him and the stories they had to tell, Tommy left lasting warm memories in the minds of many during his shortened life. He trained as an electrician in the army and then worked his brothers Tony and Johnny for some years and went on to work for himself. You would find him driving the road's of West Wicklow and Kildare, big ladders on the roof and conduit sticking out the window of a variety of cars; he kept it low key. No matter whom he worked for they greeted him as a friend and trusted him to do a great job for them. He loved to be in among friends having a chat and a laugh at race meetings, football matches, games of golf or after at the bar. Everyone knew Tommy as a loveable rogue, he loved to find ways to go around the norm, a few pound folded up in his hand going into the races for a better spot, again on the way into the reserved enclosure, no one was too important to be asked ' have you any oul tips', he'd appear at his mothers or sisters with perfect timing to get fed, having said all that he was also the kind of man who could never see anyone stuck. Tommy had his flaws, we all do, but he was a good man who carried his friends and family around in his heart. The family would like to thank Sister Consillio and her staff in Athy and Galway, for their support over many years. To Dr. Power and the Staff of Naas Hospital who worked so hard to bring him through on a number of occasions. A heartfelt thanks to Tom and the staff of Beechpark Nursing Home who became his family over the last five years, gave him a better quality of life; and allowed him to die peacefully in the end. Thanks also to Fr. Douglas Malone, Dunlavin, for his support and for presiding over Tommy's funeral Mass. A special thanks to the extended family, friends and neighbours who helped and supported the family at this sad time. Tommy is survived by Margaret, his Children John & Cathy, his brothers Tony and John, his sisters, Moira Reid, Brigid Bollard, Ann Heatley, Geraldine Boothman and Pauline, and his extended family & friends. Tommy's Months Mind Mass will take place in St. Nicholas of Myra Church, Dunlavin - on Tuesday February 14 at 8 p.m.. The Mass will also be for Dick's 30th Anniversary. May they rest in peace.
