GRASSROOTS

Wednesday November 04 2009

BALTINGLASS Lotto stands at €8,450. Six people matched three numbers, M. Clynch, Killalech, Brenda Murphy, Timolin, Seán Keogh, Kiltegan, Eirc c/o Dutchmans, Brendan Hayes c/o Dutchmans, Jim O'Brien Irongrange.

Junior Bs won the West Final beating Kiltegan well. Congrats lads. Same night Seniors beat Kiltegan in the league, a double beating for our neighbours. Hard luck to Seniors who were beaten by Rathnew in the last few minutes of the game in the 125 Centenary Cup final. Congrats and well done to Anne-Marie Doran and Karen Walsh from Dunlavin who represented Ireland in the Shinty in Scotland last weekend.

Juveniles: The only team that was out on bank-holiday Monday was U-12s who lost out to Arklow in the shield final. The youngones gave it there all and narrowly lost out. Team was Lorcan Lennon, Kevin Lord, Daniel O'Hara, Robbie Walsh, Marie Kealy, Aaran Barrett, Micky Keogh, Jordan Kelly, Adam McHugh, Sean Gahan, Chris Heaslip, Cormac Doyle, Jack Timmins, David Parke, Luke Daley, Cian Gahan, Ciaran Germaine, Adam Kennedy. U-16s drew with St. Kevin's in the west league.

Ladies: The girls can't be stopped this year. Another county title for the U-16s. The favourites Arklow travelled to Baltinglass last week to play the County Final. While Arklow were the holders for two years the girls started off well with early goals. They played well in terrible conditions with driving wind and rain. It didn't dampen the spirits of the girls while captain Susan Dowling lifted the cup to a Balto roar. Girls to shine were Katie Murphy, Chloe Farrell, Lucy Cushe, Anna Fitzpatrick, Paula Faulker. Many thanks to Paul and Jim again for all the work they put in with the girls. The rewards were shown. Thanks to parents and supporters who turned out on such a bad night. It was worth it.

RATHNEW

We have a busy weekend ahead as our junior C team have reached a county final after a much deserved win over Aughrim last weekend (at this point I apologise for the no show of notes last week). This team deserves a full house of support on Saturday in Aughrim, please check fixtures for throw-in. The very very best of luck to the management team Pat Sheehy and Pat Hunter and all concerned.

Then on Sunday we head to Parnell Park where our Senior team will take on the Dublin champions Ballyboden St. Enda's in the Leinster Championship, throw-in 3 p.m., please check fixtures column.

On Sunday last our Senior team played Baltinglass in the 125 celebration cup, and returned home victorious without performing to the heights we have witnessed lately, on a scoreline of 4-04 to 09.This game was spoiled by a gale force wind blowing straight down the middle, we battled well against the wind in the first half, going in one point down at half-time. In fairness the opposition played very well in the second half and had us on the back foot for most of this half. In typical spirit, after losing James Stafford for a second yellow card we piled on the pressure in the closing stages and with the introduction of Trevor Doyle on to the edge of the square, this seemed to give Rathnew a lift, and Trevor had a super innings scoring three goals in what must surely be the substitution of the year. Scorers: Trevor Doyle 3-0. James Stafford 1-0. Leighton Glynn 0-3, Tommy Gill 0-1. Well done Harry, Deckie and Trevor. So the convoy of Red and Green will head to Dublin next Sunday please God, see you all there.

Pride of place this week goes to our Minors, who had a marvellous win against our neighbours St. Patrick's in the semi-final of the championship, on a scoreline of 3-09 to 1-12. This team showed huge character in coming back from a seven point deficit early in the second half, to record a memorable win, considering this is such a young minor team with NINE of the panel to play in a U-16 semi-final. Players to shine on the day: Christopher Murphy, Jay O Gorman, Sam O'Connor, Jodie Merrigan, Stuart Murphy, Eddie Doyle and Simon Dunne. Well done to the management team of John Snell, James Stafford and Barry Mernagh.

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we in Rathnew G.A.A. extend our deepest sympathy to the Franey family, Rathnew, on the death of their mother Marjorie, late of Bridge Cottage, Rathnew.

Marjorie passed away at her home on Thursday evening last. The name of Marjorie Franey is synonomous with G.A.A. in Rathnew. This great lady > dedicated her life to supporting her club, and indeed county. She was a great Gael. One could compile enough information to write a book on Marjorie's escapades following her beloved Rathnew around the country. She was a very religious person and has been travelling to Lourdes for the past thirty years, never failing to return with "BUCKETS" of Holy Water for friends family and the Rathnew players, the Rathnew dressing rooms would never be the same without Marjorie's holy water. Just three weeks ago even though she was very ill the supply was sent to the players, and she was one proud lady on county final night in the Village waiting to welcome home the victorious County Champions. Her two sons Anthony and Eamonn wore the Red and Green their lifetime and she was so proud when her son Eamonn picked up a Leinster Club Championship Medal in 2001. This is the end of an era in Rathnew, and this great lady is missed so much already, Lord rest you Marjorie you were SIMPLY THE BEST. To Marjorie's sons Anthony and Eamonn, her daughters Marie, Anne and Fiona, sons in law, daughters in law, grandchildren and extended family, our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

DONARD-GLEN

The preliminary round of the ladies Minor championship was held in Baltinglass on Monday last. Here a selection of girls from the West teams lost to a selection of Tinahely/Carnew and Coolkenno teams.

This was a high scoring cracker of a game. S. Reid, L. Allen, J. Hanbidge, M. Slater, A. Kelly, N. Whelan, and R. Byrne represented our club. It was anyone's game until Laura Allen received a bad shoulder injury and the opposition seemed to get on top straight away. The final score was 6-6 to 4-7. We wish Laura a speedy recovery.

Our Senior footballers will play their last

Our Junior footballers lost to Baltinglass in the Division 4 final in Baltinglass on Tuesday night on a scoreline of 3-11 to 1-06. This was the last game of the year for this team who played a record number of games but no trophies. Scorers Patrick Carney 1-0, Nigel Byrne 0-3, Owen Kelly, Christy O'Toole and Nigel Bermingham 0-1 each. Thanks to manager Pat Judy Keogh and his fellow selectors for looking after this team all year. Our Senior footballers were also beaten by Baltinglass in Baltinglass on Tuesday night in Division 1 of the senior football league on a scoreline of 106 to 0-12. Scorers: Seánie Furlong 1-04, Jacko Dalton 0-1, Anthony Furlong 0-1. This team has only one game left in the league when they play Stratford next Saturday in Kiltegan. No silverware either this year for our hurlers as they were beaten by Arklow Rocks Parnells in the final of the Dessie Murphy Cup in Arklow on Sunday morning after playing against a gale force wind in the first half and scoring 2 goals and 2 points to Arklow Rocks 4-06 we did not make much use of the wind in the second half and were beaten on a scoreline of 4-08 to 3-07. Ray Kelly 0-4, John O'Toole 1-02, Liam Kavanagh 1-0, Nigel Bermingham 1-0 and James Whelan 0-1 were the scorers. Last weeks lotto numbers were 1, 5, 10 and 25. Match 3 winners Marian Daly, Tynock and Mary Foley, Fadden. This week's jackpot is €4,800 draw will take place in Katie Lowes. Our variety night concert has been postponed once again to Saturday 21st November as it clashes with the Ireland v. France match in Croke Park. Our annual AGM is fixed for Friday, 27th November in the Club House.

AN TOCHAR

The club would like to thank most sincerely all those who joined in the celebrations on the JERSEY DAY which was held on September 27th last and most especially our players who represent their club all year round. Also special thanks to a great number of people who helped on the day. A big thank you to Janine Brennan and our local Comhaltas Group, Rathdrum Pipe Band, Giney Savage for bringing her ponies, Amy Kenny, Sinead Gaffney and Shauna Staunton for face painting, Sean Kenna for sound and microphones providing the music. Last but not least Kathleen Kenna, Lucy Molloy and Ellen O'Gorman for looking after refreshments and also Trisha and Ger Byrne and Roundwood A.F.C for the loan of their tent for the day. Thanks also to County Player Ciarand Hyland who presented medals on the day.

An Tochar v. Eire Og: The Junior B Final was a very exciting game played between two very evenly matched teams, everyone felt a draw was a fair result with the final score being 1-8 for both sides. Eire Óg had the livelier start scoring 1-1 before our lads got going but our we battled back and midway through the first half a Shay Cullen goal gave us a one point lead. The sides were deadlocked at halftime, 1-4 each. The second half was played at a frantic pace where the lead was exchanged on several occasions. Both defences were in command but several times a raiding forward broke free for a crucial score. Our scorer in chief was Shay Cullen who scored 1-6 aided by Joe Coleman with 0-2. Final score 18 each. The team gave a gutsy performance and will look forward to the replay in Ashford next Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Team: Peter Byrne, Gavin Kenny, Gary McGillycuddy, Noel Power, Paul Kenna, Brendan Brady, Oscur Long, William Halligan, Cormac Carthy, Ciaran Crowley, Eddie Kavanagh, Hugh Kenna, Joe Coleman (0-2), Shay Cullen (1-6) and Eddie Davis. Subs: Conan Daye, Paul Brady, Michael Brady, John Carr and Stephen O'Neill.

Glenealy Hurling Club extends its deepest sympathy to the O'Brien family, Ballyknocken on the passing of Peggy Russell. RIP.

BALLYMANUS

Congrats to Hannah O'Neill on winning a cool €7k last week, cracking open the safe to the club lotto jackpot with the numbers 3, 5, 10, 24. Match three winners were Sharon Keogh, Sis Byrne and Ann Keogh. The club's annual racenight will take place on Friday, November 27th in Paddy's, with race cards currently floating around. Horses again cost €10, with €50 being dished out for eventual winners on the night. If any seller wants additional race cards they are asked to contact Padraig. The race night is the main social event in the club calander, but also one of the main fundraisers, so all support appreciated. Finally best wishes to Paddy and Mark who take part in the county trials this weekend.

ARKLOW ROCK PARNELLS

Arklow Rock Parnells GAA club would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved in the club in what can be deemed as a successful year. Our Bord na nÓg section have had great success this year attending many blitzes throughout the year from under 6 to under 14s. Our under 6s team managed a hard fought draw with Glenealy in our own pitch. Our under 8, under 10s and under 12s attended as many blitzes as possible and featured well culminating in the under 12s reaching the county final, narrowly losing out to Avondale. Our under 14s had a great year winning the inaugural Sheehan-Mellon Cup, hosted by the club. The same under 14s went on to win the under 14s county "B" final over old rivals Éire Óg (Greystones) in dramatic fashion by a single point from a goal by Paddy Mellon with the last puck of the ball. Congratulations to Matt Curran on receiving the Volunteer of the Year award at the awards ceremony held in the Arklow Bay Hotel. Thanks to Matt for all his contributions to the juveniles over the years.

All credit must go to all the mentors, coaches and above all, the parents for their time and commitment throughout the year. Our seniors had a great year, reaching the Senior Hurling Championship semi-final for the first time in 15 years. This was helped in no small part by the contributions of the mentors and players for their time and commitment throughout the year; special thanks go to Mick Byrne from Ballygarrett and the Rocks Mick Byrne as well as Vinny Byrne and Danny Curran on the backroom team. The club embarked on refurbishing the clubhouse once again, and with dramatic affect. To mark the refurbishment, the clubhouse held and open day on Sunday the 26th of October. There were over 200 photographs on display from the establishment of the club in 1953 to the present day. There was great discussion, debate and craic between genrations of past and present players. It was great to see such a great blend of the older members and younger members with three founding members, Seamus Barnes, Col Byrne and Eddie O'Regan present. Many of the great players of the past were also in attendance such as Mick O'Brien, Hughie Farrell, John Kelly, Jack Reilly and Matt Curran to name but a few who came together for what proved to be a great day and night for reminiscing and trips down memory lane.

We would like to extend a warm thanks Brian Brennan of the Arklow Bay Hotel for his support in this project as well as all the club members for giving up their time and talents to help in the renovation of the clubhouse. We would like to thank in particular the foreman of the project Martin O'Reilly and Jimmy D'Arcy. We would also like to thank Turloch Bracken for the plumbing, Vitra Tiles and Danny O'Reilly for the tiling, Deef McCarthy for the electrical work, Lisa Mellon for the curtains, Derek O'Leary, Eddie O'Regan and Willie Walker for the painting and donkey work and once again all the members for their free time and help. The Rocks also won the Dessie Murphy Cup at the weekend beating a very capable Kiltegan team. Congratulations to the lads for a great effort closing out the season on a winning note and a welldeserved break.

KNOCKANANNA

All roads lead to Aughrim again this week. Thanks so much for all the support the last day, it gave the team a real lift to see so many people from the area at the ground. We'd love to see a similar turnout again on Saturday to get behind the team (and the juveniles) and hopefully this time we can turn in a performance that will do the whole of Knockananna proud. There was a great atmosphere in the village afterwards, if a little subdued, so whatever happens it will be a great occasion to be involved in again on Saturday.

There was no winner of the lotto jackpot on the 20th of October, but Joe Doyle and Mary Foley matched three numbers and each receive €50. Same again on the 27th, with only Padraig Lancaster matching three numbers, so he won the €100 euro.

The club wishes to extend sympathy to the Darcy family on the death of Tom.

NEWCASTLE

Our hurling team travelled to Arklow last Sunday to meet Dublin's Naomh Finbars in the Leinster club championship. The match started well but unfortunately they were defeated and close the season as league and championship winners. Well done to all the lads and management involved over the past year. There was no winner of last week's lotto jackpot. The numbers drawn were 1, 7, 8 and 26.
