Referees recruited

Wednesday February 17 2010

WICKLOW GAA has its biggest ever compliment of match referees in long time after recruiting 18 new whistlers this year.

These new referees, drawn from several clubs but not all, have undergone a three weeks training course under Tony Jordan and Trevor Culbert.

For several years Wicklow has been lamenting the shortage of referees in the county, thereby putting the running of all its games and competitions at risk, so this influx of new blood is very welcome indeed.

It brings to 63 the total number of referees at the disposal of Wicklow GAA for the running of its games.

The current referees are also undergoing inservice training to improve their skills.

A Bray motion seeking to have all referees in the county assessed was passed at a meeting in Aughrim last week.

Applicants are being sought from clubs to act as assessors and they will be trained in their responsibilities by Croke Park.
