O'Hagans on a winner

John O'Hagan on route to victory at Bennetsbridge aboard Lasquini which was trained by his brother Declan.
TWO BROTHERS teamed up to score a notable win at a point-to-point race meeting at the weekend. At Bennetsbridge on Saturday, John O'Hagan was the jockey that rode to victory on Lasquini du Moulin, a horse owned and trained by his older brother Declan.
Both brothers, who are in their 20s, work out of their stables at Two-mile-Water, Wicklow, where Declan has six horses in training at the moment.
Lasquini du Moulin is top of the pile at the moment and he won at Bennetsbridge in some style on Saturday, a popular winner as he romped home in this open lightweight race at six-to-one ahead of a strong field of 12 runners.
In doing so he saw off the challenges of Ned Kelly and six-tofour favourite Travina, a horse once trained by Willy Mullen.
Previously in two races Lasquini du Moulin ran a very strong second to Arc Encile and Back Stage, a horse that is a fancied runner in this year's Aintree Grand National. Declan hopes to run Lasquini again in a couple of weeks.
Declan and John are nephews of Mick O'Hagan, the vice-chairman of Wicklow GAA, Leinster Council representative and fixtures boss.
The two lads played a bit of hurling and football with St. Patrick's at under-age level, up to minor, before horses and horse racing became their passion.
Declan O'Hagan served his time and worked for three years with Wexford trainer Colm Murphy when he was looking after such greats as Brave Inca and Feathered Lady at the time.
The O'Hagan family have always had horses on the family farm. Together with their father, also names John, the O'Hagan brothers were involved in the last couple of years with the revival of the East Coast Harriers which hunt every Saturday along the east coast during the hunting season.
Bray meeting
The Bray Hunt Point to Point meeting was held recently at Fairwood Park in Tinahely. Disappointingly, weather-wise at least, we had to endure a bitter northerly wind in addition to squally sleet filled showers making it a disappointing, difficult day for many racegoers to hang around and not an occasion to shoot the breeze. On the positive side, racing was very good with a number of very exciting finishes fought out on the punishing uphill finish.

With eight of the original entry of ten standing their ground, this gave us a very good contest, which was slightly diminished by the none appearance of local heroine, Loggan Lass.
