Hurling quarter-finals to take centre stage
THE SFC takes a rest this weekend and in its we have a mixed back of tricks - featuring quarter-finals in the SHC and a lot of action in Intermediate and all Junior grades of football. The Baltinglass v. Bray Emmets replay in the SFC goes back to the 11th/12th weekend. COOGAN HARDWARE SHC AVONDALE V. KILTEGAN Little has separated the two sides in recent years so this is a game that is hard to call. John Mitchell has got Avondale motoring in recent times and while they may not be the finished article yet the feeling in the camp is that they are good enough to make the semifinal at least
KEOGH'S CORNER
WHAT'S ANOTHER YEAR? Noone has told me but I am prepared to bet that Tony Hannon was among many Wicklow people in Croke park on Sunday. If he was then he must have been watching with more than ordinary interest as Kildare player Richard Kelly lined up the kick that could have ended Down's interest in the All-Ireland.
Kids have a ball at Cúl camps
HOLLYWOOD GAA Club was the venue for the last of the VHI GAA Cúl camps held in Wicklow this year. In all 26 such summer camps were held throughout the county in 2010 catering for in excess of 2,000 boys and girls from primary schools. Hollywood was one of four Cúl camps held the week before last. They were joined by Glenealy in staging hurling camps, while two football camps were held at Enniskerry and Newtown.
Glenealy edge out Knockananna in thrilling final
Glenealy 6-5, Knockananna 5-6: Glenealy and Knockananna served up pulsating entertainment for the couple of hundred enthralled spectators that were fortunate enough to be present in Avondale GAA grounds last Wednesday night. Knockananna entered the game as slight favourites by virtue of a comprehensive league victory over the Glenealy girls six weeks ago. Glenealy for their part were chasing a third consecutive title at this grade and determined to prevent the team from the west adding to the under-14 title that they captured with some ease earlier in the month.
Emmets hold out against Avondale
BRAY EMMETS held out for a narrow win over Avondale in the replay of their Junior C hurling championship game at Ashford on Thursday night. Avondale had a chance of putting this replay to extra-time when they were awarded a 20 metre free in injury-time. Clive Heffernan blasted to the net for what would have been the equaliser, but the referee cancelled the score and ordered that the free be retaken because he had not given the signal for the shot as he was tied up recording an Avondale substitution at the same time.
Spotlight switches to Senior hurling championship
THE SPOTLIGHT switches to the Senior hurling championship this weekend with the two knock-out quarterfinals down for decision.
