CLUB CALL: NEWTOWN JUNIORS F.C.

Wednesday March 10 2010

FROM OUR four games played last weekend we recorded one win, a draw and two defeats. The under 8's away day hoodoo continued away to Arklow Town in a 1-nil defeat. In a good performance players to shine on the day were Nicola Doyle, Jordan Butler and Ciaran Keogh.

Bad day at the office for the under 9's as they exited the cup at home to Ashford Rovers on a 1-nil scoreline. On the day there was a lot of effort and toil but it just wasn't to be their day. On the day Melanie Clarke and Cian Walsh tried hard.

Wins for the under 10's have been as rare as a sunny day this year but that all changed last weekend as they booked their place in the cup semi-finals after a 2-0 victory over a gallant Roundwood side. Sean Gregory gave Newtown the lead early in the first half and it was nip and tuck for the rest of the half. Roundwood gave everything in their quest for parity but were dealt a massive blow midway through the second half when Keegan Heffernan smashed a superb second goal for Newtown.

The 12's had no game as their respective opposition failed to field a team. The girl's under 12's played a very entertaining game at home to Templeogue. Both teams cancelled each other out until 10 minutes from time and then the goals started to flow. A mix up in defence alowed the visitors to take the lead, but Newtown fought back to take the lead with two spectacular goals. Lydia Sinnott-Elliott let fly from just inside the opposition half and the ball sailed into the top corner despite the keeper getting her fingers to the ball.

Two minutes later Katie Miley decided to have a go from 25 yards out and the ball flew into the net like a rocket. With time running out Templeogue forced a corner kick and from the resultant kick, a visitors forward scored from close range.
