Baptism of fire for Dargle Rovers
Wednesday September 01 2010
DARGLE ROVERS were given a baptism of fire on Sunday as they crashed to a 5-1 defeat on their Wicklow League debut at the hands of St. Patrick's.
It certainly was not the debut the Bray side would have hoped for and it now sees them sink straight to the bottom of the table, while Pat's have roared to the top of the table after this win. Adam Tuke bagged a brace for the Avoca side on Sunday and Niall Devereux, Andy Doyle and Chris Canavan all also notched.
Hot on the heels of the Saints are Wicklow Cup 2010 runners-up Wicklow Rovers, who beat recently promoted BBK United by three goals to one thanks to goals from Jason Waters, Cathal Moody and Aidan Small.
The honour of netting the first Division 1 hat-trick of the season goes to Arklow United's Garry Byrne, who fired home a treble in his side's 4-2 win over St. Fergal's AFC. Byrne was joined on the scoresheet by Eddie Kavanagh.
Wicklow GAA star Darren Hayden was also in fine goalscoring form this weekend, putting away both Greystones United's goals in their 2-0 win over former Premier Division side Ashford Rovers.
The final Division 1 fixture of the weekend saw Aughrim Rangers pick up three points after a 2-1 success over Glencormac United at Allen Park. Another Wicklow GAA star - Don Jackman - was on target for Rangers alongside Scott Newsome, with the duo firing their side into a 2-0 lead. United pulled one back through Kevin Redden but the hosts held on for all three points.
