NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC: Three games were played by our teams last week and from these games we recorded one win and two draws.

Performance of the week goes to the under-13s who as mentioned last week had been playing well but not getting the results, well that all changed last week with an outstanding team display away to Ashford Rovers.

They led 3-0 at the break and added three more goals in the second half to run out 6-2 winners. Mark O'Brien scored twice, Chantelle Owens, Lydia SinnottElliott, Ciarán Doherty and Alex Heffernan also helped themselves to goals. Becky Cassin and Aodhan Garvey stood out in a great display and this win puts the team back in contention in the Shield. The girl's under-12s played out a scoreless draw against ' Joeys' in a game reversed from Sallynoggin. This was a game were defences were on top and goal scoring chances were limited. Newtown's best chances fell to Lauren Nolan and Hollie Murphy in the first-half and to Jessica Dunleavy and Katie Miley whose shot hit a post in the second-half. Best players on the day were Cliona Crammond, Lydia Sinnott-Elliott, Hannah and Orlaigh Doyle. The under-9s played at home to Ardmore Rovers in the Shield and after three minutes found themselves 20 down, both goals coming from corners. The team had to dig in for the rest of the half as the opposition enjoyed long spells of possession.

The story of the second-half was totally different as Newtown started to make inroads into the Ardmore rearguard. Conor O'TooleOdlum halved the defecit with a deft header from a corner and with five minutes remaining Adam Heffernan levelled the scoring with a shot from five yards. During the half Newtown keeper Joseph McDonald had to pull off a couple of smart saves. Best players on the day were Melanie Clarke, Cian Walsh and Seán Byrne. Everyone in the club wishes under-9s player Jack Doyle a speedy recovery from his recent injury. Fixtures for the weekend of Saturday 27th/Sunday 28th February 2010:

LADY GATORS

Wicklow Lady Gators 43, Tridents 25: Looking to cement their place as second in the division, the Wicklow girls got off to a flying start from the beginning and totally dominated a strong Blanchardstown side.

The Gators were determined not to allow the Dublin side to settle and jumped into a very early lead as Kristine Delahunt and Julie Reid both scored from inside. With Tridents tightening up Shauna Malone then hit two huge long-range shots and the Gators were ahead 80.

Assists from point guard Laura Hodginkson to Kristine Delahunt and Rachel Kavanagh increased the lead to 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

More suffocating defence from the Gators saw the Tridents team turn over the ball again and again and Alex Copeland punished them hitting lay-ups on the break and then pulling up to hit long-range shots, with great assists from Julie Reid and Laura Hodginkson who controlled the Gators fast break.

With Tara Lenihan finishing out the half with a strong inside move the Gators were well and truly in control leading 24-2 at half-time as the Trident offence were totally run off the floor and forced into taking hurried shots.

But the second-half saw the Gators take their foot off the pedal and Tridents began to make a comeback as the Gators were complacent in their game.

Thanks to the great shooting of Rachel Kavanagh and Alex Copeland the Gators kept it close but Tridents ended up reducing the lead to 32-16.

Tridents having got on a run kept the game tight and pushed the Gators in the last quarter, but Rachel Kavanagh making vital steals and converting them into lay-ups, it kept them in touch and out of trouble.

As Kristine Delahunt, Julie Reid and Rachel Kavangh dominated on the defensive boards the Gators finished the final quarter even with Shauna Malone banking in a threepointer for the Gators.

This was a great win for the Gators that now sets them up for a battle with third placed Kildare.

The Gators must not keep up their hard work as the league enters its final quarter with March being a big month with games every week.

Scorers: Krsitine Delahunt 13 points, Alex Copeland 10 points, Rachel Kavanagh 7 points, Shauna Malone 7 points, Tara Lenihan 2 points, Julie Reid 2 points.
