Congratulations to everyone involved. They lost their second last game 3-1 to Broadford and drew their last game 1-1 with Laura O'Brien scoring in both games. Training is continuing on Monday nights from 8 to 9 for new players and this season's squad. The Premier team started their season on Friday and played out a 1-1 draw with Wicklow Town with the goal coming from Keith Doyle. A great performance from a young team on the night. The Division 2 team trailed 3-0 and came back to 3-2 with goals from Craig Butler and Niall Manning but couldn't manage a draw in the end. WICKLOW ROVERS

Our Leinster Senior team played out their second successive 1-1 draw when they travelled away to take on Mount Merrion. Luke Byrne scored our only goal in a game by all reports the lads should have won.

The second team got off to a winning start when they claimed all three points away to BBK United.

Goals from Jason Waters, Cathal Moody and Aidan Small gave them a 31 victory to give them the perfect start to the season.

Our third team were unlucky as they went down 2-1 at home to Conary United, first team coach James Macklin was on the scoresheet and with a bit of luck they could have got something out of the game.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers would like to congratulate Conor Byrne who plays with our 9C team on being picked to be a ball boy at the recent Premiership game between Newcastle United and Aston Villa at St. James' Park.

We all hope he really had a good time and enjoyed himself as he cheered the magpies on to a 6-0 victory over Villa.

Rene, Mark, the under-11A team and everyone at the club would like to wish Conor Brennan a speedy recovery from a fractured elbow, we hope you're back in action.

Another player on the injured list is Brendan Hawes who broke a bone in his hand, Jimmy, Brian, the 13B team and all at the club wish him a speedy recovery.

Arklow United Racing Pigeon Club held a double-header last weekend with two races on the cards from both land and channel, Pilmore Beach near Youghal and Talbenny Wales.

The club's Pilmore Beach race had the partnership to beat come through once more when the high-flying O'Reilly lofts again took centre stage for their fourth club win in succession.

The O'Reilly team are really setting the pace and have hit a rich vein of winning form beating a 600 plus strong field as they continue their assault on the clubs young bird averages. The bird that did the damage registered a velocity of 1,551.12 ypm for 95 plus miles.

Just two birds were recorded in race time from the club's Talbenny race, both to the same loft. It's a big congratulations to the Kennedy partnership of Brendan, Mary and James who broke their novice status in fine style, emerging as very deserving winners from a difficult race. This young partnership are tireless workers for the club and received their just rewards. The membership wish them continued success in the future at both club, federation and in open competition.

This weekend's race will take place from Kinsale race point, with the Irish National Flying Clubs young bird and old hens national being flown from Penzance on Wednesday, the 8th of September.

Carnew AFC is back in full swing with the senior men out with their first match last Sunday with a disappointing result for Carnew.

Fassaroe v. Carnew, with the result in favour of Fassaroe, with a 1-0 defeat, it was a sluggish start to the season against a good Fassaroe side. Mark Byrne and Cormac Doyle were Carnew's best performers on the day.

The club would all so like to say well done to the three girls who went for trials for the County Wexford under-16 team and to the four under-11 boys who went for trials for the Wicklow county team.

The Wicklow Senior League kicked off last Sunday. Our Premier team kicked off on Friday night with a tough opening fixture away to Rathnew AFC. Maurice Dunne opened his account for the season with a fine solo effort in the secondhalf. Rathnew responded almost immediately after we scored and it could have went either way in the dying minutes as both teams pushed for a winner. The lads will be looking to bounce back next Sunday against Sugarloaf at home.

Our second team kicked off with a brillant 3-0 away win against Greystones. Thomas Duffy, Trevor Doyle and Bobby Quinn scored the goals on the day and will be looking to keep up the good form this year after their impressive first season in the league last season..

Thank you to all who supported our juniors disco and looking forward to the next one which is on the end of September.

To all that helped paint clubs floors two weeks ago a big thank you. SOUTH EAST ROAD CLUB

Twelve-year-old Reece Young from Arklow, who is a sixth class pupil of St Joseph's National School, Templerainey, Arklow brought home the first ever AllIreland medal for the club in taking second place in the under-12 time trial in the National under age Cycling Championships, which was held in County Tyrone over the weekend. The gold medal was won by Adam Thatcher from Slaney C.C., Enniscorthy. The National championships attract the top cyclists from all over Ireland and because of its geographic location this year had a higher than normal entry from the North which is recognised as a cycling stronghold. Reece was very unlucky in his second race in the championships, which was the criterium race. He was chasing the leading trio with every chance of catching them when he unfortunately crashed, thus ruining his chances in the overall standings. The criterium was held on a very tight circuit of little over a kilometre with a lot of very tricky corners. Reece showed great courage and remounted his bike and finished the criterium despite having very nasty "road rash".

On the following day showing no illeffects he participated in the road race he took an excellent fourth place with only inches separating him and the bronze medal winner in a tight bunch finish.

These are terrific results for a very talented cyclist who has only been competing at a serious level this year having joined the club only two years ago. Reece comes home with a silver medal and a trophy

Niall Heffernan from Ballylacey, Gorey had a very good All Ireland's considering that he missed most of the road-racing season and concentrated on the track where he amassed a lot of wins and a provincial champion's jersey. He was out of the country for more than two weeks at the height of the season but still must be satisfied with his results, which placed him around the halfway mark in all his competitions. Niall's natural determination and athletic ability will see him go a long way in the future

Stephen Bracken had an excellent time trial and finished in fifth place in the under-15 championship. He led the criterium with another rider for almost its entirety until they were caught yet on the last lap Stephen managed to hold out for a fine eight place. He deserves an award for the most aggressive rider. Stephen has been one of the best under-16 cyclists in the country this year and is a totally committed cyclist who never gives less than one hundred percent. In the road race he took 11th place. The bunch sprint was marred by an accident about a quarter of a mile from the finish, which took down a lot of riders and seemed to have taken the impetus out of those who weren't involved in the crash

Stephen comes away with a trophy for the time trial, as there was a trophy for the first six in each stage

Cian Keogh who is a member of Bray Wheelers lives near Redcross but is such personable young man that he is part of and fits in very well with the SERC family.

Cian took was in sixth place in both the criterium and road race in the under 11 races and receives two trophies to reflect those great results.

Thanks to all who supported the under age members, those who sent good luck and congratulatory texts and kept in touch throughout the weekend. All of our riders go terrific support from their families over the weekend, especially as it was a long journey to the North, but very rewarding journey.

Well done to all club members who completed the tough Sean Kelly Tour in Dungarvan on Sunday last. ARKLOW TENNIS CLUB

The final of the Ladies Doubles Championships produced a three set thriller last weekend at Arklow Lawn Tennis Club.

The match was a tense affair with the fitness and younger legs of Jacinta Kinch and Martina Behan eventually overcoming the experienced pairing of Kay Hickey and Irene Ryder , 6-4, 4-6, 62.

The Singles Championship Finals take place next Saturday at 3 p.m. with Jacintha Kinch up against last year's champion, Emma Hession in the Ladies final.

The Mens semi-finals take place this week with Stephen Storey, the current champion, up against former champion Cormac Hyland and two former champions, John O'Brien and Ciaran Hyland meeting in the other semi-final.

The Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles Championships and the Mens Plate are also nearing completion and the Autumn Doubles Team League will commence shortly, details on http://altc.ie.
