Rathnew AFC go four points clear at the top
Wednesday March 10 2010
RATHNEW AFC B opened up a four point lead at the top of Division 3 with two wins this week.
In midweek, the Shamrock Park outfit beat Fassaroe YC 2-1 at the Bray venue and then on Sunday they picked up another single goal victory, beating Clash Celtic 5-4 in a thrilling tie.
Jody Merrigan and John Sayer both hit doubles, with Craig Butler netting a single as the Villagers increased their lead over Carnew to four points.
Carnew also enjoyed a fruitful week, beating sixth placed Wicklow Town 4-0. Sean Kinsella bagged his second hat-trick in as many weeks and he was joined on the scoresheet by team-mate Eugene Jordan. Carnew may be four points behind Rathnew, but they do also have four games in hand over the Villagers.
Another side with promotion hopes is Enniskerry SFC, but they suffered a surprise defeat to 11th placed Conary United.
Both sides had trebles scorers in their sides on Sunday, with Stephen Smith finding the back of the net for the former three times and Graham Power also doing so for the latter.
Paddy Lambe was also on target for the hosts, while Eddie Roche and Eoin Murtagh also netted for United as they won 5-4. Despite that loss, Enniskerry remain in third in the league due to Arklow United's failure to beat Charlesland AFC on Sunday.
United were held to a 1-1 draw by Charesland, 12th in the league, with Chris Kelly getting the Arklow side's goal. This draw means they now trail Enniskerry by a point, but they have two games in hand.
