Wicklow Rovers move to top of table
Wednesday December 23 2009
WICKLOW ROVERS moved to the top of the U-12 Division league with this win over previous leaders Enniskerry.
Goals from Alan Power and Kieran Bloomfield gave the hosts a 2-0 half-time lead and the Whitegates side dominated the second period and held out for the result to ensure they edge a point ahead of Enniskerry in what is becoming a very close title race.
The hosts may have won the clash but it was the visitors who started the brighter when Olivia Flanagan fired narrowly wide from ten yards.
But that bright opening didn't last long as Rovers took the lead in the ninth minute. Darragh O'Connor passed it inside to Peter Thornton and the striker crossed it to the back post where Alan Power was waiting drill it past Enniskerry goalkeeper Niall Wilson.
Both sides had been very evenly matched prior to the opener so perhaps Enniskerry felt hard done by after conceding the opener, but within seven minutes of falling behind they were 2-0 down.
Darragh O'Connor whipped in a ball from the left and man of the match Kieran Bloomfield flicked the ball into the roof of the net.
Two minutes before the half-time break Enniskerry's number ten Conor O'Farrell had a great chance to pull a goal back when he was one-on-one with Wicklow goalie Brendan Hawes but he could only find the side netting with his shot.
After the break the home side really got into their stride and but for Enniskerry's magnificent goalkeeper Niall Wilson they could have scored several more but they won't be complaining as they now sit top of the table thanks to this 2-0 win.
